Ferries to Lerwick, Scotland

Lerwick is the capital of the Shetland Isles, and as such it is a lively, busy, bustling town full of all the amenities anyone could hope for yet it still manages to maintain an air of beauty and peace thanks to its enviable coastal position.

Lerwick – the only town within Shetland – has a population of 7,500, but spending time there doesn’t feel like a squeeze. There are a number of themed bars and clubs, and it’s ideal for a fun night out.

Lerwick (meaning ‘muddy bay’) was founded in the 17^th century as a marketplace, primarily so that the herring fleets from the Netherlands could land and sell their goods quickly and efficiently.

However, the market did not have the correct permits, so the local court decided it should be entirely destroyed!

Thankfully, it was soon rebuilt, although 10 years later the same court made the same order, and Lerwick was gone again. Finally, the correct permits were obtained and Lerwick was able to stand.

If boats are your first love then this is the place to be; the waterfront is heaving with all kinds of crafts including yachts, fishing boats, and even historic vessels.

There is also the Shetland Museum and Archives to visit, as well as Clickimin Broch, the Croft House Museum, Fort Charlotte and plenty more.
