There is something special about Plymouth. Located on the UK’s stunning south coast, this city in Devon is vibrant, cosmopolitan, and exciting, but it is also friendly, and full of charm.
It was during the Industrial Revolution that Plymouth really came into its own, becoming a substantial shipping port and import and export hub. It has been a city since 1928, and it certainly lives up to its title bringing people from across the country and the world into its welcoming heart.

Plymouth, as you might expect, is bursting with things to do. This is the city that has it all, and anyone who visits, even if just for a few hours, will leave with that legacy instilled in them. Despite its city image, the favourite spot in Plymouth is Plymouth Hoe. The Hoe is a large open expanse of greenery that offers the most wonderful views across Plymouth Sound. Within its walls is the Royal Citadel, the best 17th century fortress in the UK, and Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, which is open to the public, rises above it all.
And if you ever thought of trying surfing, Plymouth is the place to start. There are a number of excellent beaches dotted around, as well as plenty of surf schools to teach you the basics.

Driving directions
The port sits at the south western tip of the city and is well signposted. It doesn't have ring-road access so you'll need to drive through Plymouth to reach it.
The A374 runs through the city and leads to Union Street. From here Martin Street will lead to the entrance of Millbay Docks for the continental ferries to Europe.
The A374 runs east out of the city and up to the A38. The A386 does this too albeit in a westerly direction.
To the west the A38 leads to to Liskeard, and Bodmin. Here the A30 is the main road south to Cornwall or north to Launceston and Okehampton.
To the east the A38 leads through Ivybridge to Exeter. Here is the start of the M5 that runs along the south west of England to the Midlands, crossing the M4 for access to South Wales and London.
The A386 heads north out of Plymouth and travels up through Okehampton to Bideford, a short distance from Barnstaple.
Car parking
Parking is available at the port. While parking cannot be pre-booked there are plenty of spaces available. When I checked in May 2016 the rate was £10 per 24 hours.
Getting there by coach
National Express has a coach stop at Bretonside Bus Station in the heart of the city. You'll need to catch a taxi or local bus service to reach the port.
Route 315 links Penzance and Eastbourne via St Ives, Falmouth, Truro, St Austell, Newquay, Bodmin, Plymouth, Exeter, Weymouth, Bournemouth, Southampton, Portsmouth, and Brighton.
Route 500 connects Penzance to central London through Truro, St Austell, Newquay, Plymouth, and Heathrow Airport.
Route 324 bridges Penzance with West Yorkshire. Services are routed from Penzance to St Ives, Falmouth, Newquay, Plymouth, Torquay, Exeter, Bristol, Birmingham, Derby, Sheffield, Leeds, and terminates in Huddersfield.
Getting there by train
Plymouth Railway Station is in the heart of the city centre, a short distance north of the the port. A taxi is recommended for this journey.
Services run from here to Exeter St David's, Penzance, Dundee and Glasgow via Leeds, London, York, Cardiff, Gunnislake, and Manchester.
Journey times are quite reasonable. Birmingham and London are around 3½ hours away using the direct service. Cardiff boasts the same time albeit with a connection in Bristol. A direct service to Edinburgh takes 8¾ hours. Plan your journey here.
