Ferries from Fishguard, Wales

Located in Pembrokeshire, Wales, Fishguard (Abergwaun in Welsh, which means ‘mouth of the River Gwaun’) was once a hamlet that has, over time, grown into a town.

It is divided into two parts, known locally as Lower Town (Lower Fishguard) and the main town of Fishguard itself. Between the two halves is a winding hill with a spectacularly steep incline – climbing it is an excellent way of keeping fit!

Perhaps surprisingly, the activity that Fishguard is most well known for is kayaking. Hire a kayak and safety equipment or join a tour and see how you fare on the currents and white water of the River Gwaun. As well as water sports, Fishguard’s Last Invasion tapestry, which has been compared favourably to the Bayeux Tapestry, must be seen when in the area. This 30 metre tapestry tells the tale of the last ever invasion of mainland Britain; it happened in 1797 when 1,400 French soldiers landed in Fishguard to attack. They surrendered just two days later. The Royal Oak Pub – which is still a pub today – was where the surrender was signed.

Other activities include the Gwaun Valley Brewery which holds tastings and tours, Fishguard’s extensive artisan market, the antiques centre, and the Dyffryn Fernant Gardens.
